Harvard Doctor: “Your Building Can Make You Sick or Keep You Well”

Hi y’all!

Alex Reid here with your Monday roundup.

Are you ready to get back to your normal life?

How would you like to take your spouse out to a nice restaurant?

Or, perhaps, you would like to go to a sports game with your friends…

Maybe you’d love to just see your family in person again, for once.

Whatever your “normal” is, you’re not alone.

The whole world is anxious to get back to a normal life that doesn’t include gloves, masks, and invisible six-foot personal bubbles.

Before we completely reach that point, Dr. Joseph G. Allen, the director of the Healthy Buildings program at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, gives some insight.

And it points to the four walls you see every single day...

According to Dr. Allen, large residential buildings — like condos and apartment buildings — can be even riskier for residents.

And it’s not for the obvious reasons that you may think.

Sure, whenever the foot traffic increases in a closed-in space, the likeliness of catching something is higher…

If you live in a large building, think of all the delivery guys or residents walking in and out of your reception area at any given point, touching the door knobs and counter surfaces as they head out to take the dog for a walk or get fresh air.

Dr. Allen says there’s research to prove that these types of buildings can serve as helpful barriers or they can be your worst enemies.

And it all points to THIS one thing.

In the race to get back out into the world, scientists have made new applications for old discoveries…

One doctor has even called it “magical.”

Plasma has been used for some time to help treat patients, and doctors have used it on COVID-19 patients, too.

Galit Alter, professor of medicine at the Ragon Institute of Massachusetts General Hospital, MIT and Harvard, says this of plasma:

One of the oldest therapies we have to treat infectious disease is the transfer of plasma from convalescent people… It’s wild; we’ve been doing this forever.

According to doctors, this is how it works:

  1. Recovered COVID-19 patients donate blood.
  2. The cells fall to the bottom, and the plasma rises to the top.
  3. Doctors use that plasma to treat current COVID-19 patients.

Professor Alter also adds:

Plasma is composed of lots of amazing things… It's composed of antibodies. It’s composed of all kinds of other molecules that can help to arm cells or educate cells or even temper cells.

Go here to learn about the promising results.

While doctors are trying all they can…

Scientists are in labs doing the same.

One of the biggest goals in the science world is to find a COVID-19 vaccine.

And plenty of research teams are in competition to see who will make the perfect vaccine.

Here’s the latest on that.
