Heart Talk: Can We Just Ditch Cardio Altogether?

If cardio isn’t your speed, medical experts say weightlifting is worth a try!

According to the study, weightlifting can: 

  • Help lower blood pressure and cholesterol levels.
  • Reduce plaque buildup to improve blood flow.
  • Help maintain a healthy weight.

Eric L’Italien, a physical therapist with the Harvard-affiliated Spaulding Rehabilitation Network, says:

Getting in the right amount of weight training is easier than you think… And devoting just an hour per week may improve multiple markers related to heart health.

This is great news for those who are restricted in movement (or simply hate doing cardio).

And it’s not just theory; many studies support this way of thinking.

The numbers don’t lie…

One study included 13,000 adults (average age 47) and monitored the subjects’ exercise habits. 

As posted in Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise, folks who weight trained for at least an hour per week showed 40% to 70% lower risk of heart attack.

JAMA Cardiology also published a study that showed people in aerobics and weight-training groups had less fat directly touching the heart by 32% and 24%, respectively.

Another study just hit the health world, and you won't want to miss this.

Researchers at the University of Southern California examined over 17,000 brain scans from the UK Biobank. 

That’s one of the BIGGEST sample sizes ever seen.

The scientists studied how alcohol consumption and cigarette smoking can age the brain.

According to Business Insider, here are the findings:

The study found that every gram of alcohol consumed a day aged the brain by 11 days. Smoking a pack of cigarettes a day for a year aged the brain by 11 days.

Essentially, “drinking alcohol every day can speed up brain aging by one week per session,” according to the study.
